Apple snails are really good algae eating snails to keep in a big tank but not a small tank (they get as big as a baseball or an Apple...).Or if your looking for smaller snails hornwort snails are good too.But you could get algae eating fish, there small too or a hillstream loach.

mystery snails can be good, they grow to the size of a golf ball, so make sure you have space. They are typically around £2. (can be cold or tropical, so you may have to look around for cold)
Another option as already said is the Hillstream Loach which is between £2 – £5 at pets at home.
DO NOT GET chinese/siamese algae eaters of any type, pets shops will often sell these as cold water fish, they are fine as babies, but as they get older they will eat the slime coating on your fish which leaves you fish open to infection.
Good Luck.
