How do we change from a freshwater aquarium to a saltwater aquarium?

we have freshwater fishes only, but now we want to get some saltwater, how do we make the changes?
The guy in the store told us that we need to let the water alone for like a month before putting in the fish, buy prescription drugs si this true?
